American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends:
- Limit screen time to no more than one to two hours per day of educational, nonviolent content, which should be supervised by caretakers
- Require homework and chores be completed before screen time
- Encourage your child to plan television viewing in advance
- Screen the shows/games your child watches/plays
- Watch television/play games together and reinforce your values
- Explain how advertisers promote products that are unnecessary or even bad for you
- Role model the behaviors you would like your child to imitate, such as reading or engaging in outdoor recreation
- Don’t allow media use during dinner
- Keep board games, books, and magazines in the family room
- Make your child’s bedroom a media free zone. Be aware that television watching or game playing near bedtime can interfere with sleep and lead to fatigue.
- Take your child on regular visits to the library.
- Encourage involvement in sports, the arts, hobbies, and family activities
- Build family reading time as a routine every night.
