Winter Activity Ideas
Spending
time having fun with family members is important. Snow days, weekends,
and February vacation may be an especially good time to connect. Here
are a few ideas to consider below. If you have a unique outdoor or indoor family activity, email it to us - we'ld love to hear your ideas and share them with the Page Hilltop family community.

- Take a hike in the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge and look for animal tracks.
- Fill a bucket: Clear a neighbor’s sidewalk.
- Walk, cross country ski, or snow shoe on the Nashua River Rail Trail.
- Build a snow person or snow animal.
Inside:
- Make a fort using a table, sheets, beach towels, or whatever you have on hand.
- Put on a play or film a movie with a script you write together, costumes, and props.
- Create an obstacle course using pillows, chairs, toys, and other objects to crawl around, step over, hop beside, carry to, place on top of ….
- Try cooking with a family friendly recipe such as Baked Macaroni and Cheese Cups.

Raising Sons: Making Sure Boys Get What They Need (all ages)
Monday, February 7th, 2011 7:00 pm: Location:Cary Library, Large Meeting Room, 1874 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA
Presented by Susan Marx, B.S.Ed, M.A. There are many ways to be a boy and to be a man. In today’s society, this concept is not always supported or encouraged. This workshop explores the unique joys and challenges of raising sons and helps parents meet the needs that boys present, from getting much needed physical activity to having safe places to express strong emotions. Participants will leave with a knowledge of the development of boys and patterns that boys tend to follow as they grow. They will also gain strategies for advocating for the needs of their sons and building strong parent-child relationships. The Influence of Executive Function Skills on Written Expression and Reading Comprehension
Thursday, Feburary 10th, 2011: 7:00 pm: Location: Groton Dunstable High School Library, 2nd floor, 703 Chicopee Row in Groton. Presented by Dr. Bonnie Singer, Architects for Learning. Sponsored byGroton-Dunstable SEPAC and free and open to the public. No RSVP or registration needed Dr. Singer will discuss how various cognitive, linguistic, executive functions, and self-regulatory systems support and constrain one’s ability to write and illustrate why learning to write is challenging for many students. She will present a brief overview of the EmPOWER™ method for teaching expository writing, which she developed through her many years of research with Dr. Anthony Bashir. In addition, Dr. Singer will explore how executive functions influence reading comprehension and will present principles and strategies for reading instruction.
